Zach began by writing Python scrips that used mathematical functions to draw sets of ovals; each with a gradually changing radius and centerpoint values; which he printed on a pen plotter and animated to further explore (see below). He then explored how simple geometries can capture the transformation of 2d to 3d form. To create the effect in a font, Zach drew three interpolating masters along a single axis for each glyph (east, origin, west) which ultimately achieved a rotational effect.
From Zach:
“A variable typeface that explores the possibility of conveying depth through letterforms. The project culminated in a web-based type specimen that uses the rotating letterforms as characters in an illustrated retelling of Edwin Abbott Abbott's Flatland.”
