Heirloom

by Lian Fumerton-Liu
From Lian:

“Heirloom was inspired by the history and craft of physical embroidery. Each character or glyph has been revived from found needlework templates published between 1964 to 1996.

I’ve found typing is akin to knitting -- we weave words across the page -- a key for a stitch. The goal of Heirloom is to draw attention to these similarities by merging the manual act of embroidery with the capabilities and ease of OpenType.

Heirloom also serves as a growing, collaborative archive. Before the introduction of printed designs, embroideries and lacemakers needed a way to record and reference different designs, stitches, and effects. Similarly, Heirloom is a way to record and reference type, characters, and patterns either created [by] oneself or learned from the past. ”
